Microsoft Threat Intelligence found Crypto issues, the world’s wide network of Microsoft’s security professionals, has sounded an alarm over a significant “malvertising” campaign targeting cryptocurrency traders.
The campaign highlighted by Microsoft went live earlier this month.
Innocent users get tricked into installing a malicious installer masquerading as legitimate trading software from such well established firms as Binance and TradingView through fake ads.
Node.js based malware embedded within the downloaded package infects the system instantly and begins gathering information about the victim’s computer along with creating a scheduled task to ensure that the malware stays on the system.
The Unclear scheduled task can evade anti virus detection.
The victim receives a window displaying a legitimate cryptocurrency trading website as a decoy.
The intrusive scripts gather vast amounts of information that range from the list of installed software to the BIOS version, region options, network adapter information, etc.
The information gathered could possibly be used in targeting individual victims or planning for future attacks.
To safeguard themselves against the relentless malicious campaign, prospective victims are advised to track suspicious script activity, turn on endpoint protection, and limit outbound traffic.
Microsoft Statement On Crypto Issues
“Organizations can minimize the effect of attacks that exploit Node.js by informing users about the dangers of installing software from unapproved sources and tracking and limiting Node.js execution,” Microsoft stated.
